[Kunstwort von englisch formula translator], Informatik: problemorientierte Programmiersprache für mathematisch-technische Anwendungen. FORTRAN wurde 1954 von der Firma IBM in einer ersten vorläufigen Fassung veröffentlicht und in der Folgezeit über mehrere Entwicklungsstufen, z. B. FORTRAN II (1958), IV und FORTRAN 77 (1978) dem Leistungsvermögen der Rechner angepasst. In Fortran 90 (1992) wurden erstmals datenparallele Konstrukte integriert (die Schreibweise verdeutlicht, dass Kleinbuchstaben in Fortran-Programmen nunmehr offiziell zulässig sind). Die Parallelverarbeitung in Fortran 90 geschieht über Vektorbefehle, die, wenn sie auf einer parallelen Rechnerarchitektur (z. B. Vektorrechner) ausgeführt werden, einen dem Parallelitätsgrad entsprechenden Rechenzeitgewinn bewirken. Der aktuelle (erweiterte und veränderte) Standard ist Fortran 95.
